The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reveals in a recent report that during the month of August, 11 people were killed in attacks in the divisions of Mayo-Tsanaga, Mayo-Sava and Logone-et-Chari.
These divisions, bordering Nigeria, are those that record the most incursions by fighters from the Boko Haram sect, against which Cameroon has been at war for 10 years. OCHA reports that these people were killed during 139 “security incidents” recorded in August alone. It is also noted that 2 people were kidnapped and 15 others injured. These attacks led to the displacement of 244 households, for a total of 1,324 people.
In addition to the insecurity, the Far North region was hit by floods in July, which killed 11 people, according to a UN count. These floods destroyed more than 12,500 homes and more than 7,000 hectares of crops. “Physical access in general, particularly in the divisions of Mayo-Danay and Logone-et-Chari, remains difficult due to heavy rains that make most roads inaccessible/impassable. Alternatives are being explored, such as using the Yagoua – Bongor bridge towards Kousséri or river routes,” reports OCHA.
