Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, Minister of Basic Education (Minedub) nevertheless notes several difficulties related to respect for the gender balance (men-women) during recruitment.
The start of the school year has been effective since September 5, 2022. According to Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, Minister of Primary Education (Minedub), 3,000 new primary school teachers will be recruited this start of the school year.
“We are recruiting so that Cameroon reaches the quotas set by Unesco (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). In particular three Schoolteachers and the Head Teacher, therefore four teachers, in each school of 100 pupils. We have been recruiting massively for almost four years to try to respect this ratio” explained the member of the government, in the columns of the government daily Cameroon Tribune of August 29.
According to the Minedub, women represent more than 66% of the staff of the Ministry of Primary Education. When they are recruited, they are single and young. The preservation of these ladies is very uncertain. If a woman gets married and has children, we are not against family reunification. But when these cases become redundant, that’s a problem. As a result, in cities, these institutions are regularly found to be overstaffed. Are we going to discriminate when recruiting? regret the Minister.
For the record, Cameroon has, on the basis of the national school map published in 2022, more than 14,000 public establishments and nearly 8,000 private primary schools, i.e. in total more than 22,000 schools in these different levels of education. This represents an increase of 3,423 schools in four years. There were 18,577 nursery and primary schools in 2018.
As for secondary education (general and technical), official statistics show that the country had 3,273 establishments in 2021, including 2,153 in the public sector.
